Overview
Mali, or the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked nation in Western Africa. Mali is the seventh largest country in Africa, bordering Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. The nation's borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara, while the country's southern region, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country's economic structure centers around agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali's natural resources include gold, uranium, and salt.
Business and Industry
In the early 1990's, the government of Mali created economic reform policies in order to stimulate growth in the economy. There was almost immediate success with these policies, as GDP began to drastically increase for Mali, so much that by 1995, Mali would become an official member of The World Trade Organization. Currently, the country is looking to expand its tourism industry as well as increase its infrastructure via roads and highways.
Farming and Agriculture
The key industry of Mali is agriculture, with cotton being the nation's number one export. Mali also produces rice, millet, corn, vegetables, tobacco, lumber, gold, and livestock. Nearly 80% of the exports from Mali come from the agriculture industry, with over 75% of the labor force employed in the agricultural sector. Like many countries in Africa, Mali has a vast wealth of natural wonders and resources to offer. Over the past decade, Mali has become an African leader in cotton exportation and it considered to be one of the leading cotton exporters in the world.
Climate Change Effect
The recent climate change and global warming issues have greatly affected the farming and agriculture industries in Mali. The increasing temperatures have dried out farmlands and created droughts in certain regions of the country. These effects have prompted Mali to undergo research in climate change and global warming in an attempt to better understand and possibly control the effects of global warming and climate change.
Future Outlook
Mali will look to expand in the future based off of its agricultural strengths as well as their progressive government economic reform policies. Mali has all of the building blocks for a progressive economy, they have the natural resources, the foreign financial investment, and the road infrastructure to make this progressive changes happen in the near future.
