Overview

Officially the Republic of Sudan, Sudan is situated in the northeast of Africa. It is the biggest country in the continent of Africa, and as a member of the Arab League, is the largest country in the Arab World too. By area, Sudan is the tenth largest country in the world. It is bordered by Egypt, the Red Sea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad, the Central African Republic and Libya.

Languages

Arabic and English are the official languages of Sudan, however, all in all there are some 142 languages and dialect spoken in the country, including Nubian, Ta Bedawie, Nilotic, Nilo-Hamitic and Sudanic.

Economy

Agriculture employs around 80% of Sudan's workforce. Agricultural produce includes cotton, peanuts, groundnuts, sorghum, millet, wheat, gum arabic, sugarcane, cassava, mangoes, papaya, sweet potatoes, bananas, sesame, sheep and livestock. Main industries in the country are cotton ginning, textiles, edible oils, cement, sugar, soap distilling, petroleum refining, pharmaceuticals, shoes, armaments, light manufacturing, automobile assembly. The country has limited resources, but it does have reserves of petroleum, iron ore, copper, chromium ore, gold, silver, mica, tungsten, hydropower. Sudan's major trading partners are the United Arab Emirates, China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Germany, Australia, India and Japan.

Geography

The Blue and White Niles meet in the capital Khartoum, making the River Nile, which then flows through Egypt and to the Mediterranean Sea. The climate is made up of arid, desert land with little rain, which suffers from sandstorms, and then areas in the south which get more rainfall and a more fertile climate for crops. The country has an extremely diverse array of flora and fauna, however specific conservation measures have not been taken to protect them, and many species are endangered due to hunting. Examples of the animals found are wild elephants, waldrapp, white rhinoceros, gazelle and turtle.
