Language

Slovene is the official language of Slovenia, which evolved from dialects in the 18th century. Older dialects still exist in areas of the country, but these are in decline, and the official Slovene written and spoken language is standardised. The language is spoken by about 2.4 million people, mostly in Slovenia itself but also in national minorities in Italy, Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia.

Economy

A member of such bodies as NATO, the EU, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Slovenia has the relatively high GDP of $54.67 billion, and is a developed country in Eastern Europe. The labour force is divided between the service and industry sectors, for example in areas such as metal production and smelting, electronics and power equipment, wood products, textiles and chemicals, of which many make up the country's $18 million exports. The country's major trading partners include Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Croatia and Bosnia. Tourism is an increasingly important industry.

After gaining independence from Yugoslavia, in the 1990s, the country saw privatisations in banking, telecommunications and public utilities, and in January 2008 became the first ever former Communist country to gain EU presidency.
Since its 1991independence, the country has been focused upon improving communication and diplomacy with neighbouring countries, as well as improving its own infrastructure, and since 1997 it has contributed to a UN peacekeeping operation.

Education

According to OECD, Slovenia has the 12th best education system in the world, with its focus on adult education, special needs education, and dedicated programmes in areas of mixed ethnicity and language. There are three public universities in the country, situated in the capital Ljubljana, Maribor and Primorska.
