Country Profile: Nagorno Karabakh
Fact FileAreaTotal 8,223 km2 |
Overview
Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked region in the Southern Caucasus, lying between Lower Karabakh and Zangezur and covering the southeastern range of the Lesser Caucasus mountains. The region is part of Azerbaijan, but de facto governed by the internationally unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.
Future Development
Since recently gaining its independence from the former Soviet Union, the territory of Nagorno Karabakh is still largely in dispute, because of multiple countries claiming rights to this territory, mainly Azerbaijan and Armenia, because of this, there is little statistical information presented to the outside world. This is partly why Nagorno Karabakh news has become so important in current affairs. Recently however, the United States, France and Russia have begun talks to completely resolve the disputed territory and restore the land fully and officially to the people of Nagorno Karabakh.
