Overview
Guyana, known as British Guiana, is the only state of the Commonwealth of Nations on mainland South America. On the northern coast of the continent, it is bordered to the east by Suriname, to the south and southwest by Brazil, to the west by Venezuela, and on the north by the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, it is also one of the five non-Spanish-speaking territories on the continent, along with the states of Brazil (Portuguese) and Suriname (Dutch), the French overseas region of French Guiana (French) and the British Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands (English).
Languages and Dialects
The official language of Guyana is English, it is used in all educational and government fields. Furthermore, Cariban languages (Akawaio, Wai-Wai, Arawak and Macushi) are spoken by a small minority, while Guyanese Creole is also widely spoken in the nation.
Business Development
The main industry of Guyana is agriculture, mining is also an important aspect of their economy as well. Guyana exports many goods and is completely self sufficient in terms of food production and consumption. Also, Guyana has also greatly expanded their tourism industry as well and looks to compete with the major players in the years to come.
Educational Development
Guyana is known to have one of the best educational systems in the Caribbean, they government provides for free education, that is mandatory until secondary level. English is the language used in school and students can be taught other secondary languages as well, for their own personal benefit.
Future Outlook
In the future, Suriname looks to expand their economy, especially in the agricultural and industrial fields. Also the nation looks to expand its tourism industry as well and become a leader in the Caribbean area, as far as tourism in concerned. Furthermore, Guyana has begun research to develop renewable energy resources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric and is among the first in the Caribbean to do so.
