Overview

Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, by Peru on the east and south, and by the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is one of only two countries in South America (with Chile) that does not have a border with Brazil. The country also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 965 kilometres west of the mainland.

Business Development

The nation of Ecuador has a vast wealth of natural resources that includes, petroleum, fish, shrimp, timber and gold.  The nation also has a very rich agricultural wealth that includes, bananas, flowers, coffee, cacao, sugar, palm oil, tropical fruits, palm hearts, rice and corn.  The nation's main exports are oil and agricultural products.  The nation has enjoyed a high GDP for the past decade and looks to continue this trend in the future.

Environmental Climate Change Effects

The nation of Ecuador is one of the 18 nations in the world that are considered to be a "mega-diverse" country in terms of environmental life and species.  This is mostly due to the famed Galapagos Islands, which has over 10,000 unique species living on the island.  However, these islands are becoming threatened by the changing climate temperatures and this has prompted the government to undergo research and studies to better understand and possibly control climate change.

Educational Development

In Ecuador, education is free to all citizens and it is also mandatory from age five to fourteen for all children.  The literacy rate in Ecuador is among the highest in South America and the rate of University attendance is also among the highest in the continent.  Likewise, many scientists and researchers are attracted to the Galapagos Islands to undergo intense observations of this unique World Heritage Site.

Scientific Development

Ecuador has some of the brightest researchers in the world, especially those concerned with the Galapagos Islands.  The major focus of research has been in agriculture and environmental impact on raw material extraction in recent years.  Furthermore, the government has provided grants and donations for the research of renewable energy resources, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric.

Future Outlook

In the future, Ecuador looks to expand their economy and their scientific research as well.  They have been successful in doing this so far, partly because of government created economic reform policies, but also because of foreign investment and research, especially in relation to the Galapagos Islands.  Ecuador has a vast wealth of resources and natural habitats to study and protect and will look to continue the success they have achieved so far in their nation's history.
