Language
Standard Croatian, the official language of Croatia, is a variation on the Western Stokavian dialect, and belongs to the Serbo-Croat diasystem. The language is also official in parts of Austria, Italy and Serbia. Croatian as it has appeared in the vernacular literature, has existed for 500 years.
Economy
For the 2008-2009 term, Croatia is a member of the United Nations Security Council, as well as being a permanent member of the UN, the WTO, and the Council of Europe. It has in application to become a member state of the EU and NATO. It is also a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean, established in 2008.
The country has a stable market-economy, with a GDP of approx. $53.56 billion. The majority of the workforce (over 60%) are employed in the service sector, for example in tourism, where 11 million tourists visited in 2008, while those in the industry sector work in areas such as chemicals and plastics, electronics, metals and shipbuilding, which make up the country's $10 billion exports. Its major trading partners include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Austria, Slovenia and Russia.
Energy
Croatia has invested in renewable forms of power, for example windpower, with the first wind farm installed in 2004. In 2007 the government instilled incentives for the production of power through renewable sources, for example through tarriffs. In April 2008, Croatia, along with companies from Romania and Serbia, signed an agreement to form the Pan-European Oil Pipeline Development Company. The proposed pipeline will run from Romania via the Transalpine Pipeline, bypassing Turkey, all the way to Germany, and its projected cost is roughly $3.5 billion.
