Cambodia, officially The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in South East Asia. Cambodia is the successor state of the once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the 11th and 14th centuries. Cambodia borders Thailand to its west and northwest, Laos to its northeast and Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand.
Income and GDP are both rapidly increasing in Cambodia, most rural households depend on agriculture and its related sub-sectors. Rice, fish, timber, garments and rubber are Cambodia's major exports. Cambodia is one of the leading rice exporters in the world and claim they have over 1000 different varieties of rice. The effects of global warming and climate change are creating problems for the agricultural industry however, which has prompted Cambodia to begin research on renewable forms of energy, such as wind, solar and hydroelectric.
Transportation and Infrastructure
Recently, there has been much emphasis on tourism and transportation needs. Cambodia has been upgrading the main highways to international standards and most are vastly improved from 2006. Most main roads are now paved. Cambodia has two rail lines, totaling about 612 kilometers of track. The lines run from the capital to Sihanoukville on the southern coast, and from Phnom Penh to Sisophon. This has been done in an effort to increase the flow of tourists in and out of Cambodia, in order to increase their tourism industry.
Cambodia currently imports nearly all of its power needs, this has propelled the government to begin research on renewable forms of energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric. Cambodia has the goal of becoming completely energy self sufficient by 2035. This is seen by their government as a fairly reasonable deadline that they wish to reach as soon as possible. Furthermore, Cambodia looks to increase the value of their currency, as they call it the "Cambodia Currency".
