French is the official language of Benin, as well as tribal languages and dialects Fon and Yoruba, which are spoken by a minority of people within the country.
Benin's economy is underdeveloped, with a GDP dependant on the production of cotton, as well as subsistence agriculture. Produce includes textiles, cocoa, maize, beans, rice, cashews, peanuts, pineapples, casasva, yams, as well as some fishing which is exported to Europe. Many previously government-run organisations and businesses have been privatised. The economy is in a period of transition, since the election of a democratic government in 1990, and following that a period of foreign investment. Much of Benin's exportation goes to France, and to a lesser extent to Korea, Japan and the Netherlands.
G8 debt reduction was announced in 2005, which has helped the country with its economic situation. Benin hopes to put emphasis on its service sector, through the tourist trade, and by this means attract foreign investment and business in the country. As well as this, it looks to develop its information technology and infrastructure. The country is a member of the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa.
Benin is dependant on imported energy, predominantly from Ghana, and this makes up a significant percentage of the country's imports. To this end, Benin and neighbouring Togo are planning a joint hydroelectric project which will alleviate this dependance and also provide a more sustainable and secure energy future.
Benin is in West Africa, positioned between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator. It has a diverse climate, with lands which vary between low-lying, sandy and coastal plains, rocky mountainous areas, mangroves and swamps and vast tracts of savannah. Tourists visit the Pendjari National Park and the Reserve du W du Niger, in order to see lions, monkeys, elephants, antelopes and hippos.
