Edinburgh Art Festival 5^th August – 5^th September

History

The Edinburgh Art Festival is one of the many festivals that takes place in Edinburgh over the summer months. It was originally set up as the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) in 1947 as a post-war effort in order to "provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit." Since then, other independent bodies set up festivals of a similar kind at different points throughout the summer thus establishing a large collection of these festivals. The Edinburgh Art Festival itself was set up in 2004 and this year is celebrating its 8^th anniversary.

The Festival

The festival has a broad range of visual art on display and there is something for everyone. The festival works in partnership with local artists, galleries and museums in order to provide a fantastic scope of visual art pieces of a mainly contemporary and modern style. There are also fantastic displays from many renowned international artists and work from up and coming young talent. The work comes together in 50 ‘spaces’ which are both permanent and temporary galleries.

Events

As well as the numerous exhibitions there are also many events ranging from culture shows to comedians to artists talking about their art. If you want a more hands on approach there are also workshops carried out by artists on various techniques and a chance for you to have a go.

Children

The festival has a wide audience and aims to cater for all ages! There are plenty of activities for children to get involved in from storytelling to a tour of the galleries complete with stickers. There are particular galleries which have been highlighted as being particularly fun for children.
